Carpenter is a right-handed winger/ center who was waived by the San Jose Sharks. He was one of the seven forwards protected by the Sharks in the Expansion Draft but after only recording one point in 16 games he was placed on waivers.
The Golden Knights now have 24 men on the roster, so they will have to make a corresponding move today. That will likely be Stefan Matteau being placed on waivers and sent back to Chicago. (Update: As of 11:03 AM, Matteau has been removed from the Golden Knights roster on the team’s site.)
Carpenter will join the team at practice today or tomorrow and is eligible to play for the Golden Knights Thursday against the Pittsburgh Penguins.
The @GoldenKnights claim Ryan Carpenter off waivers from San Jose. Vegas had watched him a bit last year as a player of interest during expansion draft scouting but Sharks protected him…

The Ryan Carpenter waiver claim reminds me a lot of Subban. There are certain guys VGK scouts likely fell in love with during the expansion process and then couldn't get for various reasons. Then, they come available for free and McPhee pounces.

McPhee's focus has always been on getting "great people." Carpenter fits that to a tee having won the Yanick Dupre Memorial Award for Man of the Year in the AHL in 2015-16. #CharacterGuy

I’m a high energy guy, try to be physical, try to be good on PK and faceoffs. I think I can play make a little bit and create offense but I try to be a hard two-way player. -Ryan Carpenter
The team’s playing well and he’s a new player coming in. I don’t know a whole lot about him. Some of our scouts talked about him being on our list for expansion. Obviously, he was protected by San Jose. We’re hoping he’s one of those guys like all our other guys that take advantage of an opportunity and plays real well for us. -Gerard Gallant
I guess it’s always nice to feel wanted and to get another opportunity. I was ecstatic, at 9 o’clock that phone call can be either way. I’m just overwhelmed with gratitude and happy to be here. -Carpenter
