Evaluating VGK’s Trade Assets For Upcoming Deadline

(Photo Credit: Kartane in SinBin Discord)

The NHL Trade Deadline is right around the corner. And with William Karlsson already on long-term injured reserve and reports about Shea Theodore’s 4 Nations injury indicating his timeline for return is in line with the postseason, it appears likely they’ll be financially open for business once again this season.

It’s impossible to predict exactly how much cap space they’ll have to operate with. However, their history has shown that if there’s a will, there’s a way, and that will be no different this season.

One difference this year will impact Vegas’ high-octane front office, the asset pool. After trading two 1st round picks, a 2nd round pick, a 1st round prospect, and a usable NHL defenseman at last year’s deadline, coupled with massive moves throughout the previous three or four seasons, the Golden Knights’ available pool of assets is limited.

Here’s what’s left, ranked in order of most to least trade value at this upcoming deadline.

Trevor Connelly
1st Round Pick – 2024

Connelly stands as one of just two 1st round picks (of 10 since 2017) left in the Golden Knights’ system. He’s an excellent prospect and has shined on the ice since arriving at Providence College. Connelly has fought through some injury troubles but when he’s healthy he looks every bit of a 19-year-old 1st round pick. He’s as good, if not better, than a 2025 or 2026 1st round pick based on what he’s shown since being selected #19.

There is one caveat with Connelly. One of the reasons he dropped to the mid/late 1st round was due to some off-ice issues in his past. Every day that passes and he proves to have grown from them makes them less and less important, but if he is offered up in a trade less than one year from selection it may raise red flags to other teams. It only takes one team to be willing to take the same risk the Golden Knights did, and that team is surely out there, but many passed on him in the draft, and they could easily pass via trade as well.

Nic Hague
2024-25: 45 GP, 3 G, 5 A
Career: 341 GP, 18 G, 61 A
Contract: Pending RFA w/ Arbitration at $2,294,150

Hague stands as the most valuable active NHL trade asset for many reasons. First, he’s one of the few players in the VGK lineup without a contract for next season. His RFA status keeps him under control for Vegas or any other team that would acquire him though. Second, the Golden Knights have backup options to place into the lineup if they were to part ways with him. Theodore’s injury limits that a bit, but Kaedan Korczak and Ben Hutton give the Golden Knights an abundance of defensemen, offering flexibility.

To some teams, Hague would be even more valuable than Connelly because he’s already proven at the NHL level. He’s a Stanley Cup champion who can step into any lineup instantly. It’ll all depend on the future outlook of the team involved in the trade.

2025 + 2026 2nd Round Picks

2nd round picks can be quite valuable at deadline time. Vegas acquired Alec Martinez for exactly two 2nd round picks back in 2020. They got Mattias Janmark for a 2nd and a 3rd. And last year Anthony Mantha was acquired, with salary retention, for a 2nd and a 4th.

Realistically, the pair of 2nd round picks could net the Golden Knights a decent player, but it won’t be anyone at the level of Shea Theodore or William Karlsson. Throw them into a deal with either of the assets listed above, maybe.

Kaedan Korczak
2024-25: 18 GP, 0 G, 3 A
Career: 55 GP, 1 G, 13 A

Korczak appears to be a ready-made NHL defenseman in waiting. Yet, his time to breakthrough has not happened, mainly because of VGK’s depth at the position. With Theodore out he will likely step into the lineup and become the everyday player he’s been touted as ready to be for a while now. He’s a young, strong, stay-at-home defenseman who is a good skater and has decent offensive instincts. There’s absolutely a team out there that would take him, and there’s a chance he could be a steal for a team in the future, but don’t expect Korczak to be the kingpin to any trade at this deadline.

2027 1st Round Pick

The further into the future a draft pick resides, the less value it has. One of the main reasons for this is that often the general manager looking to acquire the picks isn’t sure he’ll still hold his position when the draft pick eventually comes to light. It is not completely unheard of for picks three years into the future to be included in trades, but it’s far less common than ones in the upcoming or following draft. The Golden Knights have never traded a 1st round pick more than two drafts away.

Brendan Brisson
2024-25: 9 GP, 0 G, 0 A
Career: 24 GP, 2 G, 6 A

The former 29th overall pick in 2020 simply hasn’t been able to make headway to jump-start his NHL career. Each time he’s had an opportunity to come up and play with the Golden Knights the performances have been lukewarm while his time in Henderson has not blown anyone away either. He’s still a 1st round pick who has never truly been given an opportunity at the NHL level, so value remains, but it’s severely limited compared to what it was. Vegas once traded Cody Glass for Nolan Patrick in a swap of maligned Top 10 draft picks. Maybe VGK can find something similar, but more likely Brisson’s value is something close to a 3rd or 4th round pick right now.

Mathieu Cataford
3rd Round Pick – 2023

Cataford has been really good in the QMJHL since being drafted by the Golden Knights. He’s been well over a point per game and scored as many as 40 in a single season. He was selected to the Team Canada World Juniors roster this December as well. There is certainly value in a prospect with offensive upside like him, but it’s hard to imagine trading him straight up for just about any NHL player. He’d more likely be an added prospect at the end of a deal to sweeten the pot.

Notable Additional Assets: Carl Lindbom (G), Lukas Cormier (D), 2025 4th Round Pick, Matyas Sapovaliv (F), Jakub Demek (F), 2025 and 2026 5th Round Picks, Jakub Brabenec (F)

I would think that you should add Whitecloud also. I think his on ice value is lower than Hague, but he has a long term team friendly deal. That being said, I think the team sees him as a leader, and future leader.

    • ThG

I don’t see Whitecloud as trade bait, with the cockeyed injury to Theo I don’t see FO trading any D men unless they get D men in return. The only real asset in “the system” is Connelly. And that isn’t saying much. Expect lean years as team is over bloated in veterans. Expect them to trade some veteran forwards to get a forward, and future drafts if anything is done at all.

      • Emmanuel

The cap is going way up and dumping just 1 contract would make a huge difference. Albatross contracts have been moved frequently.

Expect MANY more of these wins in court!

Hague, Brisson & some picks are the most likely to be moved.

VGK is (theoretically) 8 deep at D so I could see Hanifin being dangled
(I THINK he doesnt have a NMC this year, correct me) but it would
be ONLY for a top 40 NHL player.

For those not watching the tourney, Finland beats Sweden in OT in a very spirited game. Lots of hitting and action! The big one tonight with USA and Canada. Go USA. Meanwhile our King is firing 1000s of Americans and destroying agency’s . One day ….. one day, the real common sense Americans will rise up. Eventually millions will take to the streets to overthrow this dictator!

  7. JB

It’s no secret that our dictator wants to be just like Putin. It will of course backfire. The American people will not just set back while he ruins our country. Many of his ex. orders are already being challenged and stopped in courts. What he is doing to our allies, including Canada, is embarrising ! Big bad bully trump will get his undoing in the end! Go Jack, go USA!

USA wins!!! What a game. Three fights in first 9 seconds. Big hits thruout the game. Anyone who says these players didn’t want this is delusional . USA automatically in championship game Thursday. Still have game on Monday vs Sweden. Great emotion by both teams. ….. Also, visited Canada a number of times over the years for business and pleasure. All the Canadians I met were great.

Great game for the Home boys! Hanifin had a decent game– he got a few positive comments by announcers..good showing for him…and Eichel, one of the best there. Glad the teams settled down and played Hockey, after the rocky start. The Boos kept coming, but fans stayed faIrly civil after the fighting stopped. The game gave fresh meaning to the age-old saying: ” I went to a Fight, and a Hockey game broke out!”

Really don’t know what McCrimmon will do to get that one forward he needs to bolster the top nine. They could go back to Barbashev-Eichel-Stone which was very good to start the season. With Stone playing down however, I just don’t see Olofsson as anywhere near what you need for Eichel. That is where you want Tuch or some other top six winger. Stone playing down as it is now has a lot to do with filling in for Howden as winger when Karlsson is out of the lineup (Saad-Karlsson-Howden) however with a guy like Tuch you could keep Stone down to enhance depth. Once Karlsson is back Stone might click again on the Barbashev-Eichel line. Assuming a top six/nine winger is acquired, Olofsson would presumably be odd man out of the top nine assuming full roster health. My two cents fwiw.

  13. Pistol Pete

Here you move Howden to 4LW an excellent spot for him and Pearson is the odd man out. Top nine can be juggled ala Cassidy.

    Barbashev-Eichel-acquisition
    Saad-Hertl-Dorofeyev
    Olofsson-Karlsson-Stone
    Howden-Roy-Kolesar

    • Pistol Pete

If my first post was option one where Howden plays winger on the third and Olofsson is bumped, I prefer option two in my second post with Howden on the fourth line with Roy and Kolesar and Pearson is bumped. Olofsson is undersized but he has a legitimate third line career points average and is not a logical scratch. Pearson looked all the world like the ideal replacement for Carrier but his play has fallen off. Maybe it comes back just to keep things interesting for Howden.

Either way both Howden options as presented are contingent on McCrimmon acquiring a top six winger.

      • ThG

Crackpipe Pete tarots cards have hockey players on them. Plays scramble and throw down 24/7 !!

        • Pistol Pete

Whatever. The point is we need another top six winger and Howden is best utilized on the bottom three. That is how I see it and as always am open to feedback. We are at a crossroads as far as having a lineup capable of a deep run.

        • TS

  14. Canada

Some interesting comments, I think i can speak for Canada regarding the booing last night, a lot of french Canadians there last night they are passionate people , We do not hate Americans and we do not hate Trump just like your civil servants who are getting a proper shake up we hate Trumps tariffs and it will hurt some Canadians. America has every right to impose what they believe will even your trade deficit, yes you support our military but you do this to protect your northern border there is no charity involved. Would Canada become the 51st state highly unlikely, roughly 15% would agree to become Americans so Trump has a long way to go and a short time to get there. We will find alternate markets for our oil and gas ,uranium potash and electricity and lumber . For the most part America will accept a 25% increase in the cost of these and continue to purchase them. Back to Hockey , i am 70 years old and i didnt think America would dominate hockey in my life but i may be wrong . With in the next ten to 15 years i expect Canadas dominance to continue to diminish . Its happening in the Juniors and we see a big shift in the NHL as well. Hockey IQ and interest continues to grow here. Its a fast exiting game in case you missed last night . With the population disparity America will be out producing Canada with more quality players as time goes by . For today Canada is not done yet and i think they will be seeing America in the final , couple soft goals last night . Theodor was out so was Hughes. As a true Hockey fan you had to appreciate McDavid best forward in the world scoring a amazing goal against a undressed defence and the best goalie in the world.

    • NAM

I like your take on it Canada. Pretty level headed thoughts. America is going broke (really, gone broke). The relationship between the US and Canada is extremely one sided and costing the US hundreds of billions a year. It is just flat time to fix that. I am not at all in favor of a 51st state, but am in favor of stopping the subsidizing of Canada. As for hockey. I grew up watching the WHL/CHL and have long thought that league was the best feeder for NHL players. With the game becoming so soft and favoring finesse the US programs have definitely shifted the balance away from the CHL being the premier feeder. Though that statement seems really stupid watching last nights game where the US is the more physical team. I haven’t really watched the CHL in 10 years. I guess it has probably gotten softer too.

    • ThG

if you hate tariffs then why do you have them against USA ? Quid pro quo, dude. Canada has to beat Finland, and Canada was completely humiliated last night in a tournament game that was ruled with eligibility requirements heavily in their favor.

    • JB

You know so little about hockey. NHL never tried to get rid of fighting , just bench clearing situations. It’s obvious you know very little about hockey at all. You are just an idiot!

      • ThG

BJ you haven’t been paying attention. NHL and Bettman have put in so many rules to curtail fighting. Look at game from Broad Street Bullies and Big Bad Bruin days to now. Even someone with half a brain can see the differences.

“Players wanted this as a tune up for international play/ Olympics”. Newsflash players get bounced immediately in international play for fighting. The reasons are obviously flawed. If they are “tuning up for international play’ they should be playing by international rules, not NHL rules.

Get it yet brain fart ?

Its been that way since 1945, they want to keep the status quo. I was ambivalent about the issue but all the “we dont hate you just the Prez/Tariffs” BS are just excuses to continue the status quo, the mask is off. Its time for a major geostrategic realignment. Also all the crying about the 51st state is ridiculous I dont want those people getting representation in DC. Shut the border to trade we are self reliant.

Did you know the IRS is one of the largest providers of Welfare in the USA?

The IRS relies on US Residents (not just citizens) self-certifying their qualification for these IRS Welfare programs that are effectively a “negative income tax”.

From 2011-2019, there were ~30M IRS Welfare recipients each year
There were over 41M in 2020.

These phonies did not resign, or even object, when Biden recently commuted the sentences (pardoned) people already convicted of heinous violent crimes. They did not resign, or even object, when Biden pardoned people “preemptively” for crimes yet to be committed, but they are all upset about Adams. Nothing twisted about that right?

You can be sure that if PRESIDENT Harris had ordered the charges dropped against Adams their consciences would have been just fine.

These people insult our intelligence, and I am sure this shoe fits.

    Trump Derangement Syndrome:

    (1) When the hatred of Donald Trump drives you to insult or degrade your fellow Americans who support him. (or)

    (2) When you support the philosophy that any means of stopping Donald Trump is justified no matter how unethical or self-destructive those means may be. (or)

    (3) When the fear of what Trump might do motivates you to support or implement actions that would not even be considered if Trump were not involved.

Recognizing that you have the disease is half the cure. The rest of the cure comes from giving Trump a chance to do right by our country.

So ThG no feedback on my roster configuration? I enjoy the challenge of testing my understanding and seeing how closely it matches up to Cassidy’s decisions. I do think I have it right that when Karlsson is back Howden’s services as 3C are no longer required and he gets moved down to 4LW scratching Pearson. This assumes 100% health. Howden-Roy-Kolesar would be about as good a 4th line as there is in the league. Olofsson (his career average is .57) stays on as a 3rd line winger with Karlsson. Also, I like Saad up on the Hertl line. If McCrimmon does acquire another winger it could either be a big move like Tuch who would play with Eichel or if just a solid depth player (career average north of half a point a game) he could play on the Olofsson-Karlsson line. In that case Stone would more than likely have to be moved back up with Eichel.

You could trade Hague as part of a deal for a winger. They are deep in Dmen so no reason to trade a Dman just to get a different one back, like trade Hague to get a better one?

Connelly is an above average asset until he proves otherwise as Brisson appears to have.

With a significant number of veterans still in their 20’s and early 30’s those veteran bloated years are a ways off. Besides we see early 20’s talented rosters all over the place struggle against their older veteran opponents. What else is new?

Trade veterans forwards to get a forward, you mean an elite one? I would not bank on that. Perhaps you mean Roy, Kolesar, or other, we are not sure what you are proposing. Think Hague, Connelly and picks.

  22. Tim

Being it’s Presidents Day it’s a good day to at least acknowledge Trump is scaring the shit out of Democrats. The insanity of the left is so far out of touch with most Americans on both sides that how they took over the democratic party is stunning. If any American can justify the open borders, waste on Woke pet projects and all the other waste in the dark state which is being exposed your one fucked up brain washed individual. When I think of all the American homeless and intercity and appalachia poor who need a helping hand and were giving trillions away to foreign countries is downright an act of treason. Trump has his ways but if you want a guy with balls here’s your one chance to get things right.

    • Pistol Pete

      Off topic:

Tim I agree. I did not vote for Trump but I can honestly say I went into his second term with an open mind. Being open minded is critical to the best thinking whether you were a conservative like William F. Buckley Jr. or way left like Jack Kerouac. So Trump is off to much better start imo than his first term. I am all about slashing spending to eliminate deficit spending. Also glad to see movement on Ukraine. Also tightening the immigration I favor. I have not even flipped flopped that much. I have always believed the aforementioned items needed to happen. Looking back Biden could have done some things different though some of what he did I support. Fwiw my two cents.

Binningtons play has been less than stellar 2 softies against the US and 3 goals on 23 shots today , not sure what Canada is thinking . Not fair to Hill to throw him in cold on Thursday but i think he deserves a shot couldn’t do worse. I Don’t expect three fights in the first 5 minutes i think Tkachuk’s made their point what ever it was . I heard some Booing for the Canadian anthem in Boston which proves there are dickheads on both sides of the border. Expecting another great Hockey game , Buckle up.
