The Golden Knights are almost one-quarter of the way through the 2024-25 season. In their first 20 games, they’ve rattled off 12 wins, raced out to the Pacific Division lead, and rank 4th in the league in goals scored.
It’s been a solid start. But, when you break it down from the first 10 games to the next 10, it’s pretty clear the Golden Knights will have to pick it up to keep things headed in the right direction.

The number that jumps off the chart beyond anything else is goal scoring. As mentioned above, VGK currently rank 4th in the league with 75 goals in 20 games. That’s a solid 3.75 per game and would make them the most prolific scoring team in Golden Knights history (by a lot) if they do it for the entire season. However, that’s massively bolstered by the first 10 games, and specifically the first seven home games.
In the first 10 games, VGK averaged a whopping 4.7 goals per game. In just the home games inside of those 10, they scored 39 goals in seven games, or 5.6 per night. They scored five goals or more in four consecutive games in the first 10, but haven’t done it a single time in the last 10 games.
Oddly, the scoring has dropped off with the shooting numbers going up. Vegas averaged three more shots per game in the last 10 games while scoring almost two goals fewer per game. That’s because their shooting percentage has been cut nearly in half. They were the most accurate shooting team in the league for the first 10 games, and now they’ve slipped to 23rd over the last 10.
Another interesting number is hits. In the first 10 games, the Golden Knights were quite passive in regards to hitting their opponents. They landed just 17.6 hits per game which was in the bottom third of the league. Since they’ve upped that number by seven hits per game and are now in the top third. It’s not surprising because the games have been a lot closer in November than they were in October, but it is because VGK has had the puck a lot more recently than they did when they were blowing teams out.
There is quite a bit of good news in the dichotomy of the numbers though. First, despite falling to 21st in scoring and 25th in goals against, VGK have still managed to remain in the top half of the league in points percentage. The power play has not slipped nearly as much as was expected after the torrid start. And, the Golden Knights have actually improved their expected goals share over the last 10 games which is a great sign for the future.
Of course, this article cannot be written without mentioning the fact that VGK’s captain, and arguably their most important player, played all of the first 10 games and missed seven of the second 10. That clearly has an impact on the numbers. But, with or without Stone, the next 10 needs to see some improvement if Vegas is going to remain atop the division as they have for most of the 2024-25 season.

the emphasis in this article is on scoring and shooting percentage.. it should be on DEFENSIVE play.
the Vgk should be winning games with the average number of shots against being in the 26 to 28 range, and with low event hockey in their zone, with very few high danger shots against, and almost no 2-on-1’s or breakaways against, and their goalie not needing to be the star of the game and stand on his head.
That would better prepare them for winning playoff style hockey.
according to Moneypuck, the Vgk are 2nd worst in the league , right behind the Sharks, at giving up high danger scoring chances. That cannot continue.

The team scored more goals the first 10 games because we played other easy teams, many at home. As soon as we began playing tougher teams, scoring dropped off. Duh!
