Chasing Franchise Records Down The Stretch

(Photo Credit: SinBin.vegas Photographer Brandon Andreasen)

The Golden Knights have 12 games left in the regular season, one that could go down in history as their winningest ever. Currently sitting at 92 points, VGK need to collect 17 more points to tie the 2017-18 team that finished with 109. That’s just one of many potential franchise highs the team and individuals on it can set.

Team Records

Points
Record – 109 (17-18)
Current – 92

Need: 9 wins would clinch the most points in team history. They could also go 8-3-1, 7-2-3, or 6-1-5 to tie.

Wins
Record – 51 (17-18)
Current – 43

Need: 8 to tie, 9 to break the record.

Goals
Record – 268 (17-18)
Current – 227

Need: 41 goals requires the Golden Knights to average 3.41 per game. This season, VGK are currently averaging 3.24. The goals per game record is 3.39, which was set in 2020-21 (the 56-game season).

Road Points Percentage
Record – .679 (20-21)
Current – .712

Need: With 8 road games remaining, the Golden Knights would need to earn 9 points to break the record. 5-3-0, 4-3-1, 3-2-3, 2-0-7 or better would do it.

3rd Period Goals
Record: 92 (21-22)
Current: 79

Need: 13 goals in 12 3rd periods to tie the record. VGK currently average 1.13 per game, which would put them at 92.56.

Blocked Shots
Record – 1,310 (21-22)
Current – 1,264

Need: 46 blocks in the next 12 games. VGK average nearly 18 per game. This record should be broken by the end of the current three game road trip.

Empty Net Goals
Record: 16 (17-18)
Current: 12

Need: VGK average less than 1 every 5 games. They’ll have to pick up the pace significantly to break this record, but it’s definitely possible.

Faceoff Win Percentage
Record: 50.4% (18-19)
Current: 52.5%

Need: VGK average 57 faceoffs per game, winning 30 of them. They’d have to win less than 38% of the draws the rest of the way to lose this record. There has been one game all season they won less than 38%.

Individual Records

Assists
Record – 50 (Perron, 17-18)
Current – 42 (Stephenson)

Need: Stephenson averages 3 every 5 games, or .585 per game. That pace will need to rise to .750 for him to catch Perron.

Game-Winning Goals
Record – 8 (Stone, 20-21)
Current – 7 (Carrier)

Need: To play games, which does not seem likely.

Shorthanded Goals
Record – 4 (Karlsson, 17-18)
Current – 4 (Smith)

Need: Smith averages a shorty every 18 games. He has not recorded one in any of his last 38 games.

Penalty Minutes
Record – 74 (Reaves, 18-19)
Current – 64 (Kolesar)

Need: Kolesar averages exactly one PIM per game. If he plays all 12 games, he’s on pace to break the record.

Blocked Shots
Record – 179 (McNabb, 21-22)
Current – 214 (Martinez)

Need: Record already broken

Faceoff Wins
Record – 653 (Stephenson, 21-22)
Current – 602 (Stephenson)

Need: Stephenson must average 4.2 faceoff wins per game to break his own record. He averages 8.6 per game this season.

VGK May Break Season Scoring Record, But Scoring In The Playoffs Remains A Major Concern

Records? No one cares about records.

    We want the Cup.

  2. Vic

Ditto RR. This data belongs in the trash with Corsi. Need to focus on the best daily lineup for the playoff push, and then how to win the first round. Someday stats may be fun to look back at, but I could care less.

  3. Pistol Pete

With a spot in the playoffs a virtual lock and with no consideration for the outcome of the upcoming postseason I am bullish where this team sits entering 2023-2024.

As currently projected by CapFriendly Vegas will have eight draft picks upcoming including two in the third round projected as follows: #28, #60, #76, #92, #124, #156, #188 and #220. Therefore all the draft picks plus one though all in the lower (higher) range of each round due once again to finishing up in the standings.

The team is showing excellent depth in every area.

With everybody healthy here is my roster. Yes, Dorofeyev is highly speculative, for example he may tank down the stretch and get demoted to Henderson where he would reside in my forwards ranking just above Brisson. For prospective future top six forwards my ranking is Dorofeyev, Cotter and Brisson. By this I mean young players (current top age 23) who have top six potential. Of course Roy for example could win a top six spot but due to his age and experience I do not to include him in the top six “prospects” ranking.

    Dorofeyev-Eichel-Stone
    Smith-Karlsson-Marchessault
    Carrier-Stephenson-Barbashev
    Cotter-Roy-Blueger
    Howden, Kolesar

    Pietrangelo-Martinez
    Theodore-McNabb
    Whitecloud-Hague
    Hutton

    Thompson
Lehner or Hill or Brossoit or Patera (not necessarily in that order)

Have not addressed the salary cap which could be an issue, Lehner first and foremost.

Gone: Patrick, Amadio, Kessel, Quick (note Amadio and Howden a close call)

    • Pistol Pete

Would rather see Miromanov as the 7th D however I suspect they’d rather he be in Henderson getting ice time where he continues getting points, .70 per game this season, outstanding for a D. He’s turning 26 in July. If ever there was a guy his age stuck in the AHL as an NHL-ready player it’s him. Unfortunate. When his contract is up he should move on to a team that can deploy him.

    • THE hockey GOD

      PP

it’s pretty obvious the grape stomper doesn’t give a crap about Silver Knights or prospects. They are building the franchise based on trading prospects and picks (which are a crap shoot) for deemed valuable assets. Coupling that with free agency signings. That is their game plan. It only works as long as the owner(s) is willing to spend.

When Team Grape Stomper leaves the scene, the franchise will have to get another heavy spender or be stuck with owner like the Red Wings have (among other franchies). An owner not will to spend, but trying to develop via farm system. Which takes a long time, and you have to really really bad or trade existing talent to get top picks that are near NHL ready.

AS far as players staying Amadio is unrestricted free agency upcoming, Howden is not- restricted. At this point in time it’s too early to play the roster roulette game. Just like it was too early predicting VGK would end up out of playoffs as some predicted in DEC/ January time frame.

      • Obvious

Even for you this is an asinine post from a lonely old man worshipping a fake god

      • Pistol Pete

What inspired my post is that assuming CapFriendly is accuate, this upcoming NHL Entry Draft, VGK has all their picks, allaying the ongoing criticism they always trade them away. Furthermore, Dorofeyev and Brisson are both top six prospects along with Cotter so it’s not like there is no future beyond the current roster. We should also see Jacub Branbenec in Henderson next year, another prospective top sixer providing he can score over there. Brisson has gotten off to a decent start as an AHL’er, not earth shattering but it’s still early.

        • THE hockey GOD

          PP
two or three potential maybe’s is hardly any depth at all.

WE have the Tampa Bay and, likely , Seattle path forward.

Versus the VGK path forward. Two drastically different models. It will be interesting to see which one has “staying” power. Because ‘instant gratification’ (aka I WANT THE CUP NOW) at expense of ten years of losing franchise and ultimate demise of organization is probably not in best interest of true hockey fans in this city (forget the crazy stalker psycho creeps , they are not fans but are trouble makers and demented needing lots of therapy).

    • PP – your post concerning the 2023 2024 team is about as useless as Chasing various records down the stretch. Why at this point are you even concerned about next year? Let’s do what’s necessary this year before worrying about next. The way this organization functions who knows who will still be around. Win the next few games and give it all they have in a playoff run before worrying about next year. If they setall sorts of records in regulation and don’t carry that thru those records mean nothing. Put on the rose colored glasses and will them on to raising the CUP they need all the positive vibes available.

    • SMH

Pistol – a few quick comments on your 2023/24 projections. First off, I’m pretty sure that VGK has already traded away it’s 2nd, 4th, and 5th round picks in the 2023 draft – which leaves us with only 5 picks overall (including 2 in the 3rd round).

On your roster, as you point out at the end of your post, salary cap will prevent VGK from bringing everyone back. Brossoit & Hill (and Quick) being let go as unrestricted free agents just about offset Lehner’s salary coming back in (good luck on finding another team to take him after missing an entire season with double hip surgery), but we will not have cap space to re-sign guys like Barbashev & Blueger unless we trade out some significant salary. I think the most likely guy to trade (as much as I love him as a warrior) is Martinez, as he is getting long in the tooth, injury prone, has only 1 more year on his contract, and I think that 1 out of Hutton, Korczak, or Miromanov (or possibly even Cormier) could adequately man a 3rd line defenseman spot at minimum salary. Might have to include a sweetener (draft pick) to get someone to take Martinez though, due to his high salary ($5.25M).

Finally, I believe Amadio’s contract (albeit at small $) is guaranteed for next year, but would probably be easy enough to trade him out if needed. Howden is a restricted free agent next year, so could renounce rights to him to clear a bit of cap space if desired.

Anyway, there will be lots of time to discuss all of this further in the off-season, which hopefully won’t arrive for VGK for quite a long time!

      • Pistol Pete

SMH, thanks for checking in. I appreciate your insightful response and right you are; no 2nd, 4th and 5th round picks in 2023. My bad. I viewed that for the first time on my phone, saw VGK to the right of the first team and assumed VGK had the pick. If I had scrolled to the right I would have seen the details lol. You are way ahead of me! As for the cap I’m sure they’ll work it out. We’ll see if they choose to re-sign Barbashev and/or Bleuger. I WAS concerned about there being room for them. I have thought going back to the trade deadline that Hague is a prospective trade piece ($2.3m in salary and wouldn’t he even bring a pick?). Miromanov is the obvious replacement for Hague, Korczak is another and yes the Cale Makar-sized Cormier looks a lot like an NHL player already. Excellent D depth in Henderson. Though I still like the 35 year-old Martinez, I have long considered trading him for the cap space just worry it would be prohibitively expensive, (as you suggest, a pick).

I would agree though, let’s get through this season and hopfully win the Cup before worrying about the future, it’s just that imo Management has been wrongly maligned for overspending to buy talent (imo they have had to in their situation); I like to point out with all they have spent they have managed to build a decent (albeit not the strongest in the league) prospect pool by way of good scouting. Impact players CAN be found in the higher draft rounds and Pavel Dorofeyev (#79) is looking something like he might be one. Fingers are crossed for this year’s five picks!

        • Pistol Pete

SMH, my bad if your handle is SMII! Is that an H? If not there does appear to be a really faint horizontal between the I and I! Meant to post the link to CapFriendly.

The horizontal bar in H is a bit more pronounced on my phone. Guess it is an H? Weird. Lol. Anyways SMH please post more often. You are knowledgable, fair and stay on topic which is the VGK and NHL hockey (not politics/other).

    • Blitz

So you re-signed Blueger to put him on Roy’s wing and are paying Kolesar 1.4 million to healthy scratch?

You resigned Barbashev and were able to do what with Amadio, who has a year left? Howden is an RFA with arbitration. What are they going to have to pay him and do they want to?

Hill and Brossoit are UFA’s next year. Do you resign one and is Lehner playing or not next year? Like you said you didn’t address salary cap, but this is the biggest question of the 2023-24 season for the VGK hands down. If Lehner plays, you are paying 5 million for a large lumbering guy who hasn’t even played in a year coming off all sorts of knee and shoulder surgeries. A year off for a goalie is a big deal and even bigger deal for this large 31 year old. Are you carrying a 3rd goalie or paying a heavy price to make Lehner go away?

Just some thoughts or counter thoughts about your lineup. And kudos to you for actually talking about hockey.

      • THE hockey GOD

        @ B
oh my, back to square one!

you wrote ” If Lehner plays, you are paying 5 million for a large lumbering guy who hasn’t even played in a year coming off all sorts of knee and shoulder surgeries. A year off for a goalie is a big deal and even bigger deal for this large 31 year old.”

not to mention it is a BIG DEAL to come off knee, shoulder (and isn’t is also hip?) surgeries which is a large TASK for a BIG BODIED goalie to overcome. I wish wiggy biscuit the best of luck. It would a testimony to the VGK training crew if he made it all the way back without any set backs to be back at 100% injury free. Even Criossant had a set back. These surgeries take their toll. Even more so on goalies which have to often contort their bodies into unimaginable positions, in face of opposing (and their own) players crashing into them (as well as crashing into goal posts). Hardly an easy task. We shall see.

        ThG

      • Pistol Pete

Good points on the cap Blitz. As implied in my post I did not work the cap out in designing the roster, just picked the optimal from current all healthy. You’re right there are potential issues with the cap, extending Barbashev being probably the most impactful.

      • Sorvino

        BLITZ,

I posted this about three weeks ago

The VGK have 12 forwards, 7 defencemen and 2 goalies under contract next year. For this exercise I have added Brett Howden as I believe they retain him at a 1.4 cap hit. The total cap hit of these players is 80.633 million. The salary cap next year is 83.5 million.

        FORWARDS
        Jack Eichel 10.0
        Mark Stone 9.5
        William Karlsson 5.9

        Phil Kessel 1.5
        Adin Hill 2.175
        Laurent Brossoit 2.325

  4. Pistol Pete

Word is Roy and Kolesar are traveling on the trip. If Cassidy deploys both I’d prefer to see Amadio and Howden scratched and the 3rd and 4th shuffled with Roy as 4C.

    • Emmanuel

Never understood the Amadio love. For the amount of top 6 ice time received the stats are terrible. Id only put him above Howden and its close.

    • Pistol Pete

What I’m implying is unless Dorofeyev really tanks
I expect Howden and Amadio to be benched before him. It’s obvious why. Why is he’s a 22 year-old potential top six player blooming at an important time of the season albeit still an unknown quantity. Howden and Amadio are not unknown quantities. Both are what they are for the most part I’m afraid.

Harassment is not the only Nevada criminal offense that may result when a person makes threats through words or conduct. Stalking and aggravated stalking under NRS 200.575 are separate offenses.

Generally, stalking requires a course of threatening or harassing conduct, rather than a single act, that puts another person in fear of their own or a family or household member’s safety. Stalking usually involves trying to force contact with the other person as well. Cyber stalking is covered under this law. Penalties for stalking vary, depending on the circumstances of the offense, but are substantial.

Sending threats or obscenities in a letter or another form, including over the internet, is another special type of harassment offense under NRS 200.180. Making terrorist threats, which are specific types of threats, also falls under a different statute, NRS 202.448.

The allegedly threatening conduct and circumstances determine which criminal statute applies in a specific case. The potential penalties and consequences for any of these criminal offenses are extremely serious. If you face any type of criminal charge involving threatening or harassing conduct, representation by an experienced criminal defense lawyer is absolutely essential.

  11. Pistol Pete

Because some might consider Roy the most logical choice to displace Dorofeyev on the Misfit Line, I thought we might compare their AHL careers. First, Roy became a full-time NHL player at close to the age of 23. Dorofeyev turns 23 in October so should he make the roster full-time starting now he’d be in about 8 months ahead of Roy chronologically (Roy is 3 yr. 8 mo. older). Roy has played 217 NHL games to Dorofeyev’s nine so experience is on his side in consideration of competing for a roster spot. However, Roy we know is not near as effective on wing which does not in this small sample appear to be the case for Dorofeyev who played center in Henderson (I think…need to check on that).

    NHL:

Roy (includes 7 games CAR…no points):
    37 G/52 A/+32; 89 pts in 217 games (.41 pts/game); goals to points: 37/89 = .42

    Dorofeyev: 3 G/2 A/0; 5 pts in 9 games

    AHL:

    Roy:
    96 pts in 168 games (.57 pts/game); 35 G/61 A (goals to points = .36)

    Dorofeyev:
    82 pts in 119 games (.69 pts/game); 45 G/37 A (goals to points = .55)

In comparing their AHL careers what jumps off the page is Dorofeyev’s goal scoring equal to .55 of points compared to .36 for Roy. It is precisely Dorofeyev’s goal scoring prowess is why I ranked him higher than Cotter, Leschyshyn and Rondbjerg when they were getting called up before him because their physicality and defending was more NHL-ready at the time. I always felt Dorofeyev’s offensive ceiling as a prospective NHL player is the highest in the history of the HSK.

Btw, not taking anything away from Roy. He has worked hard and can be an impactful player on the roster despite the numerous extended slumps.

    • Pistol Pete

As I have noted previously 45 goals in 119 AHL games is an NHL 82 game pace of 31. AHL is not the NHL we know but that is eye opening AHL goal scoring even if it seems many have not noted it. We can be sure Kelly McCrimmon has. He drafted him.

    • TS

Tim, I’ve been imploring Ken to STOP THE POLITICS for at least 2 years. I DETEST THIS BULLSHIT. Past posters have said the same, as they canceled their subscriptions. Majority of us agree, I suspect. You and Tyler used to post regularly, two of many who basically unplugged.

      • THE hockey GOD

why do you cancel culture neo fascist hate free speech
        and america so much ??

You can’t stand the fact that you are driving AMERICA to third world shit hole with your failed policies.

No one is putting a gun to your head to read anyone’s post here. If you don’t like it , then leave, no one is holding a gun to your head to stay here either.

    • THE hockey GOD

all you liberal whiners can’t handle the truth

Alex the creepy stalker and the karen can’t handle the truth

“politics and this board is about hockey”= part of a real angry post (Jose, the most mis informed poster on internet , pay attention and you will see that this poster is angry. Something that you are clearly clueless about. You can not discern between angry and factual posts. Deal with it, seek therapy)

Well hockey is politics and it’s been that way since at least the 1960s when USA played the Soviet Union. Continued into the 1970s with Summit Series, team CANADA, and series with Russian REd ARmy versus Flyers in 1974. And again in 1980 Olympics.

Translation of snowflake whiner above “this board is about hockey not politics”>>>
they/ she are saying they only want to hear and subscribe to THEIR version of NHL politics and when they hear the other side of equation ; and what that really means then they have a melt down. When they hear the truth of the matter they cry out “ANGRY PoSTER”, “FASCIST” , they play the evil race card, and throw down one insult after another after another. That is the nature of left, spin , twist, ignore the facts. That is who they are, because they can not defend or counter the facts.

The fact remains Today’s Bettman’s NHL is mired in POLITICS. Either these people know that is fact, or they ignore it, or like DOC who didn’t even realize he was a liberal they don’t realize that they have been brainwashed.

The NHL inundates you with their special “Days” like perversity day, butt fuck day, day for sodomites, day for baby killers, day for ABCers (fill in the letters), day for neo fascists, day for gender benders, this race day, that race day, etc. And it goes on and on. Oh they call it fancy names days, use multi color (stolen from Noah and Bible), print up fancy jerseys (which the unknowing pay for with proceeds going to their sick and twisted wOKe agenda. And they gift wrap it with more twisted words like inclusive, or diversity. IT is just another way that the woke agenda pulls and hooks you in. It’s all politics.

And for those who complain I say you are hypocrites of the highest order. When the facts are shown to you plain and simple, you get angry, you lash out.
HYPOCRITES. You can’t handle the truth. The anti GOD, Anti AMERICAN, anti Humanity agenda evil agenda is exposed, and the democratic party, via like of Soros (among others) is driving it.

You have been enlightened, let the whiners and losers who voted for this crap rot in hell as judgement day will soon be upon them.

Good strategy, Alex. I FINALLY decided it’s exhausting, stressful and a monumental waste of time. I’m smarter than that, yet I got sucked in, anyway. My advice to myself: Keep my wits about me and keep it light!

  13. Tyler Durden

How proud Ken must be that his site has become a haven for crackpot assholes like THG to spew political bullshit instead of being a place to talk hockey.

    • TS

      I second that, Tyler!

      • Alex

        I’m with TS on this

Power play woes, lehner contract, occasional failure to even show up against some of the better teams – there is lots of pure hockey to mull over here

I agree, but why not just ignor? It’s been sometime since I have even read a thg post. I just scroll past them. Simple!

  15. Sorvino

Yep Jailbird, just ignore. You are correct.

  16. Sorvino

I posted this about three weeks ago

The VGK have 12 forwards, 7 defencemen and 2 goalies under contract next year. For this exercise I have added Brett Howden as I believe they retain him at a 1.4 cap hit. The total cap hit of these players is 80.633 million. The salary cap next year is 83.5 million.

    FORWARDS
    Jack Eichel 10.0
    Mark Stone 9.5
    William Karlsson 5.9
    Jonathan Marchessault 5.0
    Reilly Smith 5.0
    Nic Roy 3.0
    Chandler Stephenson 2.75
    William Carrier 1.4
    Keegan Kolesar 1.4
    Brett Howden 1.4
    Michael Amadio 0.7625
    Paul Cotter 0.760

    DEFENCE
    Alex Pietrangelo 8.8
    Alec Martinez 5.25
    Shea Theodore 5.2
    Brayden McNabb 2.85
    Zach Whitecloud 2.75
    Nic Hague 2.29415
    Ben Hutton 0.85

    GOALIES
    Robin Lehner 5.0
    Logan Thompson 0.76667

    TOTAL 80.6333 million

EXPIRING CONTRACTS (this years cap hit)
    Ivan Barbashev 2.25
    Teddy Blueger 2.2
    Phil Kessel 1.5
    Adin Hill 2.175
    Laurent Brossoit 2.325
    Jonathan Quick 5.8

  17. Sorvino

Also, in regards to Robin Lehner, they can buy him out and resign Adin Hill, and the combined total of Adin Hill’s salary / cap hit and Robin Lehner‘s cap hit from the buyout, will still be under the 5 million that Robin Lehner’s cap hit from next year if they kept Lehner. Assuming that Adin Hill gets resigned at something reasonable like 3.5 million per year.

If Robin Lehner was bought out of the remaining two years of his contract, the cap hit would be for the next four years at the following numbers.

    2023-24 $750,000
    2024-25 $2,250,000
    2025-26 $1,750,000
    2026-26 $1,750,000
