In the 2nd period last night, Tomas Hertl did what he’s been doing from the moment he stepped on the ice with the Golden Knights. He scored a power play goal from directly in front of the net. He’s now up to five goals and 13 points in 15 games and has become one of Vegas’ most lethal weapons… on the power play.
Four of his five goals have come when VGK have the man advantage. Also, three of his eight assists, which means seven of his 13 points, or more than half, have come in 51 minutes on the power play. Thus, he’s tallied just six even-strength points in 218 minutes over 16 games. And, four of the six even strength points came in two games at home against San Jose and Los Angeles.
So, in the 14 other games, Hertl has just two points at even strength in well over 150 minutes of action.
That’s not good enough from a player who Vegas spent multiple first-round picks and a hefty salary commitment to bring over from the Sharks. Bruce Cassidy agrees, and he’s been constantly moving pieces around the lineup to try and get even more out of Hertl. In Anaheim last night, Cassidy made maybe the most drastic move he’s made with Hertl yet, moving him to the wing alongside Nic Roy and Keegan Kolesar.
It was a little bit of trying to get Tomas out of the middle and onto the wing with a heavier type of players that he’ll complement. He doesn’t have to worry about defensive responsibilities as much. -Cassidy
At first glance, that means Hertl played on what has always been known as VGK’s 4th line. But Cassidy doesn’t view it that way, or at least he didn’t in the matchup against Anaheim.
Sometimes when you look at it people will say ‘Jeez, are you demoting a guy to the 4th line?’ And I think no, no we’re not. Nic Roy and Kolesar have been very good and consistent guys for us and the numbers prove that. It’s more of just moving Tomas around to another line that his game is a little more suited to right now until the rush game gets going. -Cassidy
Last night, the line changes brought Vegas down to three lines organized like this…
Barbashev-Eichel-Dorofeyev
Howden-Karlsson-Pearson
Hertl-Roy-Kolesar
That left Cole Schwindt playing just four shifts in the 3rd period on makeshift lines, while Alex Holtz and Grigori Denisenko each saw just one shift a piece in the final 22 minutes of the game.
Cassidy said the switchup was mostly constituted by a desire to get more offensive game out of Hertl, Howden, and Holtz at 5-on-5.
Some of the matchups ended up working out tonight for us. So there’s a little bit of that but it’s more about trying to get all three of those guys going because their 5-on-5 had dried up a little bit. -Cassidy
Cassidy said he liked what he saw from the supersized line of Hertl, Roy, and Kolesar, and may continue with it moving forward.
I liked it a lot. It’s a big heavy line. You’re going to be worried some nights about pace yet once Tomas got in on the forecheck his pace is excellent. Kolesar is a great skater and Nic plays the middle very well in our system. We’ll look at it. What’s the opposition look like Friday or Sunday, does it work? -Cassidy
Nonetheless, it was yet another admission from Vegas’ bench boss that he’s not satisfied with what Tomas Hertl has offered at 5-on-5. This is the 7th different line he’s played significant time on, and it’s the first time Cassidy has pulled him out of the center of the ice and onto the wing.
Hertl remains a massive piece to VGK’s PP puzzle and for that alone he’s worth having in the lineup every night. But, for the Golden Knights to get where they really want to go, he has to be a dominant player at 5-on-5 as well. They haven’t found the right combination to make that happen yet. Maybe last night in Anaheim was the solution. Or, maybe not and the experimenting must go on.

Do we have the most H names on any team in NHL history?

As Ken said, Tomas Hertl has just six even strength points in 16 games and is -7. I agree we want him to be better 5 on 5. However, the fact that this team’s power play has been better than any power play they’ve ever had in their history is a huge positive considering that Hertl is a big part of it.
I’m curious as to what Ken‘s opinion is of Jonathan Marchessault who has just 3 even strength points in 17 games. THREE!!!! Half of what Hertl has. Marchessault is also -11.
Hertl is slated to play on a line with Kolesar and Roy tonight. Good players, but these aren’t offensive dynamos. He has also played with Howden a lot who has never been in double digits in goals. Can we give Hertl some credit that Howden and Dorofeyev are having the best years of their career? Not sure but maybe.
I am fine with Tomas Hertl. Could be a little better, but he hasn’t been bad enough that an article should be written about him. My opinion.
Sorry, got to say it again even though it has nothing to do with Hertl. Marchessault with THREE even strength goals in 17 games and MINUS 11. Yikes!

are they shaking up the lines tonight
ThG
looks like seven d men in tonight ?!

Meant to say just three even strength points, not goals. For Marchy

VGK is tough team to come into right off bat (with a regular roster) and adjust to style of play. >>>>>To blast a player still relatively new to team for 5 on 5 play is completely unfair at this point in season.<<<< Especially adding on fact that the VGK have added many new players to replace Marchy, Amadio, Carrier, Marty (nearly a quarter). So you not only have to adjust to regular roster of players, but influx of new players too. Including a more regular role for Pavel, and an injured forward in Oloffson son son son. And you have a COACH in Butch who is known for juggling his lines. Remember it took no.7 awhile to come around, as well as other players. A point completely ignore. Karlsson has always been a 2C, I said as much when they first got Hertl.

Another Original Misfit is sticking around.
The Golden Knights signed defenseman Brayden McNabb to a three-year contract extension, the team announced Friday.
The deal carries an average annual value of $3.65 million.

Breaking
(thank you Joe Biden/HArris and Dems, may we have another?)
Ocean One Bar and Grille in the Miracle Mile Shops, famed as one of the cheapest restaurants on the Strip — three cocktails for $12 says it all — has closed, according to an announcement from Ocean One management taped inside the restaurant.
“Thank you for allowing us to serve you for the last twenty years. With your support, we will continue serving the Las Vegas community as we search for a new location. Lease has expired,” the announcement reads.
This permanent shuttering follows the abrupt closing of Ocean One on Sept. 19, and its resumption of service on Sept. 21, reportedly because the rent hadn’t been paid.
Along with its $4 cocktails, Ocean One was perhaps most famous for its lunches priced at $5.99 for all but the past two months of its long run. Less than $6 brought dishes that ranged from a Mediterranean wrap to a mahi mahi sandwich, from chicken penne to grilled Atlantic salmon, from shredded beef tacos to marinated flank steak.
With Las Vegas restaurant prices higher than ever, especially on the Strip, Ocean One offered a truly affordable dining option.

No one’s talking about the elephant in the room. Paul Cotter seven goal’s. Logan Thompson playing well. Holtz one goal Hill being Hill. Maybe we kept the wrong two?
Jose
Tim,
Thompson wanted to leave. So no discussion there needed.
As for Paul Cotter, so far they are losing that trade.
hdbiker7851
Thompson, at a fifth of what Hill being paid, wanted to play more – in fact from all aspects they let the wrong guy leave and should have traded Hill.
ThG
both teams are in first place, so stop your melting snow flake
Tim
No meltdown simple question. Yeh or Nah
Oh bye the way Logan Thompson about 25 Hill over 30 do the math
Emmanuel
Its a good trade for both teams, Holtz will come around especially if he rides shotgun with Eichel, not sure he fits with WK or Hertl.
If Cotter jumps to 25G no one was expecting it, look at his career stats.
LT never locked down the starters job so……..

Some trades work, some don’t. That simple. Good and bad ones happen to every team. Why some want to tear them apart each year? The boys need to take care of the Club tonight!

Hertl is doing well. PP beast. Great leader. Don’t shit on him.
