All Of VGK’s Recent Troubles Can Be Directed At The Stark Drop-off At 5-on-5

(Photo Credit: SinBin.vegas Photographer Brandon Andreasen)

Last night’s game, like many during this recent troublesome stretch, came down to 5-on-5 play. The Golden Knights potted a power play goal for the 8th consecutive game, but it wasn’t enough because they were outscored 3-1 at even strength.

Since the beginning of this 2-6-1 stretch, the Golden Knights have allowed 25 even strength goals which is the second most in the NHL ahead of only the San Jose Sharks (29). Meanwhile, VGK have scored just 14 which means a -11 goal differential, tied for dead last with Vancouver and Minnesota.

Tomas Hertl leads the way with four of the 14 goals, Pavel Dorofeyev is right behind him with three in the last nine games. Victor Olofsson has two, Jack Eichel two, and Mark Stone, Keegan Kolesar, and Brett Howden each have one. That’s it. No one else has scored an even strength goal since January 7th. Not a single goal from a defenseman, nothing from Barbashev and Roy who returned from injury, and nothing from William Karlsson before he departed with his ailment.

It’s frustrating. We’re finding ourselves in the losing column a little too much lately and we don’t want this to continue to go the way it’s going. Every night’s a tough game because no one is letting us off the hook it’s got to come from within the group. -Jack Eichel

Most of the damage defensively has come with five specific players on the ice (not necessarily at the same time). Vegas’ top pair defensemen, Noah Hanifin and Alex Pietrangelo, have suffered 15 and 14 goals against while being present for just five and six respectively. Dorofeyev has been on the ice for 13 even strength goals against the in the last nine games and Hertl has been out there for 12. Finally, Tanner Pearson has been dinged for 10 goals against while not seeing a single puck hit the net at 5-on-5 in his last 100 minutes on the ice.

Hanifin and Pietrangelo’s even strength goal differential has a stunning correlation to the team’s record. When Hanifin is positive or zero, VGK are 25-3-2, when he’s negative, they are 5-12-2. It’s similar with Pietrangelo, 24-4-3 when positive or zero, and 3-11-1 when negative. Simply put, if the top pair can remain neutral at even strength, the Golden Knights are almost unbeatable.

As for Hertl and Dorofeyev, they have been the only ones consistently scoring goals but they don’t mean much if they can’t keep it out of their net as well. The team is +28 with neither Tomas nor Pavel on the ice at even strength. They are -1 with just Dorofeyev, -4 with just Hertl, and -6 with them both on the ice.

We weren’t good enough 5-on-5, I don’t think we generated nearly enough. We didn’t get inside to do that. They do a good job of swarming and I thought we did a good job of getting away from that part but we played a lot of perimeter hockey and eventually you do have to arrive inside and get some chances there. -Bruce Cassidy

VGK’s power play has scored on 10 of the 24 opportunities during the 2-6-1 stretch. They’ve been even better recently, scoring on five of the last 10, but it has resulted in just one win in four games.

There’s really no way around it. The Golden Knights need to make massive improvements at 5-on-5 if they want to not only get out of this funk, but get back to having legitimate Stanley Cup dreams. Despite the recent -11 streak they are on, Vegas remains +18 at even strength this season. If they can turn that back around starting tomorrow night, the wins will start to stack back up as they were before.

When you have two forward lines that can’t score and are marginal or a liability defensively, it is very difficult to have success at 5v5. This is amplified on the road. The top defensive pair has trouble defending the front of the net. Add to that neither goalie seems capable of stealing a game, so every one is going to be a struggle. At this point VGK is a bit of a paper tiger.

  2. Richie-Rich

I would like to see a change with the “stay at home D” assignments. McNabb is the best they have. I believe Petro and Hanifan don’t have the seed. Every pair on the ice at 5 on 5 needs a stay at home defenseman.

    SD= stay at home D
    OD = offensive D

    SD1: McNabb OD1: Petro
    SD2: Whitecloud OD2: Hanifan
    SD3: Theodore OD3: Hague/Korczak

McNabb doesn’t have a ton of speed, but he has a very high IQ and doesn’t take risks. Whitecloud and Theodore have more speed and if they are less risk averse they can help stop the leaking. Thoughts?

    • ThG

sd3 would be a mess, finding a partner for theodore is key. How about mcnabb/hanifin; petro/hague; whitecloud /theodore?

      • Richie-Rich

Hague is faster than Petro, but he has a low hockey IQ IMO. I think Korczak has more upside than Hague but he has to earn his spot. Petro/Korczak? Yeah, I can see grouping Petro & Hague but both being stay at home. ThG.

    • Pistol Pete

Good idea R-R however Cassidy seems to want a D on the rush whenever he can get one and even McNabb can. Isn’t the art of making a pair work in knowing when one guy is the OD and the other is the SD? They are interchangeable depending on where the puck is, movement of opposing players and how the play develops. Shane Hnidy and Derek Engelland would be the ones to ask about this. You may just be onto something though!

  3. John Brown

    Blah, blah, blah

I watch what most people don’t watch. I watch FORECHECKING all game, every game. They lost because we have some players playing “prevent defense” which in football normally prevents you from winning.

Some are playing “prevent” from getting hurt” by faking or not forechecking. PT is the King of forechecking weakness.

Forechecking slows/stops transition through the neutral zone.

Watch the next 3 games and watch who avoids forechecking. Most of the time the larger the salary, the waker the forechecking.

Forechecking decides the game, not goals. The opponents can’t score easily if they can’t smoothly through the neutral zone.

    • ThG

yeah opposition forechecks with three forwards and our forwards are not coming back to support, keen observation.

    • Emilio

Agree forecheck has been ass. Petro and Theo are the worst offenders.

    • Pistol Pete

Not in any way a critique of your interesting post John Brown:

      https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Forecheck

      • Pistol Pete

I played first team hockey at a prep school in Connecticut. Our coach was often trying to get us forwards to dump the puck in, in lieu of attempting a zone entry passing sequence, and forecheck in order to gain possession of the puck. The forward closest to the puck would go into the boards in the area behind the net or other place the puck went and the other two would look to be in position to take a pass and get a shot on net.

Even at the NHL level dump-ins to the O zone is where forechecking most frequently comes into play. Also applies to rebounds or any action that involves a turnover or potential one to the opposing players (dedending forwards and D’s). Of course an attacking forechecker on a dump-in will normally first encounter a D on the wall, often a big physical D.

        • Pistol Pete

The forwards must be able to act quickly and “reset” to the defending mode once a breakout of the D zone by the defending team is certain. They must backcheck as a unit quickly in order to defend the neutral zone and support their retreating D’s. This is what Cassidy means by reset.

          • Pistol Pete

As I explained above my introduction to forechecking as a player was the O zone application, and when Cassidy refers to it, it is often in this context (acquiring and maintaining possession of the puck in the offensive zone), however to John Brown’s point, seeking to acquire control of the puck in the neutral zone is an application
of forechecking (by either team). As I understand John Brown’s point, certainVGK players are avoiding engagements for control of the puck in the neutral zone. Interesting contention.

            https://www.icehockeysystems.com/ice-hockey-systems/systems-category/forechecking-158

          • Pistol Pete

While we’re defining forechecking we might as well extend from the O zone
and N zone to the D zone where the defenders apply it to acquire possession
of the puck to launch an offensive initiative. By definition forechecking applies to gaining offensive control of the puck. Backchecking is simply the process of the forwards moving down ice towards their own end, the 200 ft. game that Eichel has become so adept at.

    • TS

John, did the players read your post? The following game vs Panthers was very physical, both teams playing tough..lots of hits, forechecking. The guys’ intensity was equal to the Panthers’. The boys play UP to better teams, but play DOWN to lesser teams. Are the guys unwilling to dial it up vs lesser opponents because they’re unwilling to risk injury, or maybe unmotivated to expend that effort unless we play a top- tier team? Both. maybe?

  4. Emilio

I love the concept. They should absolutely try it.
My D roster would look like this..

    Hague – Petro
    McNabb – Theo
    Hanifin – Whitecloud

Petro is more sound defensively than Hanifin. You can pair Hague with Petro for that reason.
McNabb can play with Theo because Theo will now be on his off-side so could make more errors.
This will free up Theo to run a bit but McNabb can clean up simple mistakes.
    Whitecloud with Hanifin.

This will keep Hague on the left. Shea is extremely talented and has played on his offside plenty of times now. Might not keep pace with the record season he’s having but it saves Hague from crashing out on his opposite side.
McNabb is the best S-A-H D we have and has played alongside Theo many times. This combo would work just fine and Theo can still jam out and be protected.

    • Pistol Pete

      By career points/game :

      Theo (.64)
      Petro (.59)
      Hanifin (.42)

      Whitecloud (.22)
      Hague (.22)
      McNabb (.21)

You may not necessarily not keep Whitecloud and Hague together to satisfy the demand to have one high offensive producing D on each pair. It may not be that simple. Cassidy knows the answer so do Hnidy and Engelland each were NHL Dmen.

  5. JP

Just a simple observation of the last 18 games: We went 8-3-0 between 12/16/24 and 01/11/25; and 2-4-1 since 01/12/25. Potential reason: Nic Roy was out injured during last half of Dec and first half Jan. While it’s not his fault directly, the line shifting that has occurred to make room for him is a contributing factor to our struggles.

… ok, returning to my armchair coaching role.

In case the reader did not see my post near the bottom of the last thread:

Persuant to my discussion with hdbiker I checked on Hill and Thompson in the Dallas series. This is an interesting topic in that Hill is looking just sort of okay and Thompson has Vezina numbers with the Caps, not that there is any real chance he comes back here. Anyways I forgot that Thompson played the first four games winning both in Dallas and coming back here to lose the next two. Hill then took over and played the last three games, losing in Dallas, logging a SO here and finally losing the series in Dallas giving up just two goals in a game the VGK could have won. His stats were very good: GAA 1.67/SV% .935. Thompson’s numbers were also good though he gave up three goals in three of the games: GAA 2.50/SV% .927.

I forgot, so Hill must not been 100% when the series started othewise he would have started? Must have been since LT played the first four games. Hill outperformed LT allowing three goals in just his first game, SO in game 2 and just two in game three (game 7 in the series) a game the VGK could have won.

Hill was very good and could have won game 7 through no fault of his own. Thompson was decent in the series stats wise but not as good as Hill. However Thompson had some bad puck luck at T-Mobile as I recall (I attended game 4…one or two of the goals were very unlucky).

Hill was injured for spells in the regular season playing 35 games: 2.71/.909

Thompson was healthy enough to play all season and played 46 games: 2.70/.908

One can see the 2023-24 numbers are nearly identical however Hill’s numbers in the Dallas series were superior and he could well have won the series allowing just two goals in game 7.

There is a case to be made for sure that Hill would start over Thompson in 2024-25.

    • Pistol Pete

Obviously Hill’s salary. You don’t put him behind the entry level salary to start the season lol. You can rotate the backup into a potentially dominant position depending on results. Obviously. Too bad LT and his agent decided to go to another team.

If I were to make an early kind of risky guess I would say Kings round 1 /Oilers round 2. It would be nice to win the division and get another banner up there and play a wild card in round one but it’s not necessary,

      • If the &^&%$*&oilers do win the division my hope is that they face the flames in the first round as that Battle of Alberta will most certainly take something out of them should they prevail.

  13. vgk21

Home ice is important in playoffs.

It would have been nice to play game 7 in Vegas instead of Dallas last spring.

    • Agree agree agree…it is better to have it than not.

      • Pistol Pete

Home ice is fine but the better team can win playoff games away. We saw this in the first two games of the 2023-23 Dallas series and game 6 in Dallas 2022-23.

        • There’s no disputing anyone can win anywhere at any time, but bottom line you play the slog of the regular season to have and maintain the most favorable road to The Cup that is possible, especially where a Game 7 comes into play.

PP, not looking good for us in the playoffs then, knowing how the team performs on the road. This year, in particular, is troubling in this area. Is it a mental thing??

  14. I’m not here to defend Thompson or Hill right now. I was all in favor of starting Hill in Game. 5 and advocated in a post.

Goaltending was not at all the issue during the series, but thinking back on it to understand Thompsons mindset when the series ended and why he might have wanted out .

As Peabody might say to Sherman, cue the Time Machine….in Game 3 nobody has ever played a better game in net than Thompson did that night… there were waves of odd man rushes and breakaways and he stood tall and VGK tied the game….and came thisfuckingclose to winning it when Hanifin had the lead pick on his stick and a chance for a 3-0 series lead.

I guess when he got replaced for Game 5 it was like he mentally checked out of the VGK uniform.

  15. As Of 815pm the panthers are up 3-2 over the ducks…there will be no valid excuse for VGK tomorrow at 5pm…the panthers will be playing on a back to back with not much rest time in between…yes they are ‘begrudgingly’ the champs and they always come to play but things are set up well for the boys tomorrow…its simply a matter of executing and getting the puck out of our fucking defense end!!

  17. Pistol Pete

Going back to Ken’s point in the article about the poor +/- of the Hertl line I need to keep watching for this. It really weighs on the forwards if their play is responsible for turnovers in the O zone and N zone leading to zone entries by the opponents. It’s quite another if the D’s are not defending the net as they should. The forwards too need to box out in front of the net and create turnovers. It’s hard to imagine there not being videos being watched by the players with the coach on this.

The Democrats are at it again, folks. Pam Bondi, President Trump’s nominee for U.S. Attorney General, is stuck in limbo thanks to the left’s favorite pastime—delays, obstruction, and more political theater. If you thought they might ease up now that Trump is back in office, think again. Their number one goal? Stop the Trump agenda at all costs, even if it means grinding the gears of government to a halt.

The Left’s Playbook: Delay, Delay, Delay
Bondi’s confirmation hearing was supposed to move forward, but the Democrats pulled their usual stunt by placing an arbitrary hold on the process. According to Senate rules, any member of the Judiciary Committee can put a hold on a nomination for at least seven days. And surprise, surprise—that’s exactly what they did. Why? Because the thought of Bondi stepping into the DOJ terrifies them.

Let’s be real here—Bondi is more than qualified. She’s been Florida’s Attorney General, taken on high-profile corruption cases, and has a record of standing for the rule of law. But none of that matters to the Democrats. Their concern isn’t about qualifications or doing what’s best for America. No, their only concern is maintaining their grip on power and keeping their corruption buried deep beneath layers of bureaucratic sludge.

He accidentally used George instead of Top Dog to again repeat his lies about talking with me at practice..called me a TWEAKER, rude( i am polite to everyone but THQ, who is an Ass), said i was sick and should seek help.
But he got mixed up with so many invisibles that he posted the wrong one!!! BUSTED AT LONG LAST!!!! I AM VINDICATED!!

only blathering idiot here, is you pee brain, as exposed by your 20 plus comments which said basically nothing.

so get lost with your hypocrisy, your flips flops repeated exposed.

take it like it is, stop your whining and crying like a baby

      • Pistol Pete

But that is not true. Do you want to debate me on forechecking and John Brown’s post or anything else I posted? I didn’t think so. Reading through my posts this article there was some pretty decent content imho. The Hill/LT piece was very good imho. You are throwing shit on the wall hoping it sticks. Not.

WE , you and me, US. stand alone here. I am well liked and respected for my graciousness and knowledge of the game. You are not well liked imo. You attempt to force your views of the world on us and try to belittle anyone who does not agree with you. Your hockey stuff is shaky at best.

        • Pistol Pete

You talk a game but when called out you won’t debate. I like to debate.

That is an empty claim. I just looked though them and imo most readers would value the content.

John Brown’s post actually challenged my understanding of forechecking. It seemed valid on the surface but I ultimately dismissed it. Forechecking applies mainly to the O zone. Effective forechecking in the O zone no more limits the opponents ability to transition through the N zone than it prevents the opponent from breaking out of their end in the first place. When the puck is stalled in the N zone, an intercepted pass for example, “forechecking” for puck possession does come into play but use of the term is semantic imo.

“most readers would , this or that”

says poster with big fat inflated ego

            get lost numb nuts

            “I like to debate.”
            you like to flip flop

    • ThG

still waiting for answer to why these hypocrites hate free speech so much. And our constitution, and they hide behind “well I fought for our country”. REally, do these morons believe they fought for free speech for everyone or no one, or just for one sided free speech ?

      your hypocrisy exposed yet again

    • Pistol Pete

So are we cool from the Cats game on or are you going to keep up the harassment? We have each said things over the course of our “feud” that neither really meant. Let’s leave it at that and move on.
